Outfit details: Trench coat (thrifted, a high school find), long sleeve shift dress (thrifted and hemmed, it used to be a lot longer), orange tights: Target, boots:Target

It was uncharacteristically rainy in Southern California earlier this week so I thought I'd slap on some cheery tights and grab my trench coat to make the most of the weather.  Definitely a day for tea drinking (earl gray) and Mexican wedding cookie nibbling!

Kallie from Happy, Honey and Lark tagged me in a post to give my .2 cents about finding the motivation to keep blogging when life pulls you every which way. Well, I suppose for me it's pretty simple: if I don't feel like blogging I don't do it. I usually come back within a day or two but this blog isn't my life; it's a way to showcase the life I live. A very important difference, I think.

I guess if I was trying to make this blog legit (trying to become sponsored, doing giveaways, etc.) it'd be way different but it's not something I am trying to pursue.  I like blogging because I suppose I've always been somewhat of a documentarian (keeping journals, scrapbooks, ticket stubs, old letters, all sorts of ephemera really) and I do enjoy taking snap shots of my world. Before I focused this blog to be a little more about fashion it was really just a day to day type journal, if you ever read my really old entries from 2009 to like June 2010 you'll see that (I only really got serious about blogging in July).  I made the switch to fashion because (if you read my blog somewhat regularly you can see this) I thrift. A LOT. I had so many gems of clothing that I would buy but not really wear so I figured if I made the blog more fashion-y I could force myself to start wearing all the great clothes I was letting languish in my closet.

Also, the blogging community is really sweet! Most everyone is friendly and supportive and the feedback is encouraging. So there you have it!

Question time:

Why do you blog? What keeps you going? What do you love/hate about it?

It's fun to look for these when it's raining!

  2. i think it is always just important to remember why you are doing it. or else you get caught up in getting readers and like you said giveaways--which is fine. but i use it as an outlet for my feelings and creativity. and to write. anything. something i can go back to later, and it will have real substance. kind of a selfish thing. but it is weren't why would someone blog anyways.

  3. My goodness, you have such a knack for thrifting! That dress is gorgeous and the way you wore it is so cute. I used to thrift a lot more when I lived at home but since I moved out I haven't found any good ones in my area! Your style and blog definitely inspires me to look harder though.

Ugh the So cal weather is ridiculous. I was getting really excited about the rain and gloomy skies but now it's super hot today and I'm just not feelin' it.

And I love your outlook on blogging. I feel the same way, it becomes less fun when you do it solely for getting more comments/readers and I find blogging to be the most fun and fulfilling when I'm being completely myself and just posting about my life!

  5. Since I started blogging my life has been way more creative! I am inspired much more easily by the things I love and constantly on the look out.

I am also so amazed by the supportive community of bloggers. Happy Honey and Lark is amazing for connecting us together. I found out about your blog through a list she just drew up of some favorite bloggers...I'm on there to, just wanted to say hi! Mine is FASHION MADE ME FUNKY (dot blogspot!)

  6. wow I never considered the word documentarian, but I guess it fits me! I dont make my blog my life, or at least I try not to anymore from when I first began it

  7. omg grant's sassy!!

i can.not.believe.you scored those tights at target. i'm about to go over there for detergent so you know that means it'll be a hot mess up in the tights. oy

and i love your stance on blogging too - i started blogging to share my finds with people in my life from socal through canada. we can't see each other every day and are always emailing so this seemed easier.

i'm just a storyteller by nature so it's a good way to document what's going on in my life and is kind of an online diary (or sorts - nothing too personal on the internet). i enjoy it this way. no pressure!

  8. I started blogging on other portal, which was founded by polish "Glamour". I meet meny girs and now we are friends. Unfortunately our old portal was closed so we had to find other place. So we are on blog spot. We share our happiness and sadness. We talk about everything. Sometimes we have meetings in reality. :)
Sometimes I hate that I'm to lazy to make new post. And I hate word verification :)

PS In answer to your question... I just started blogging a couple weeks ago so I don't really have that much experience. I started it for the same reasons you mentioned though- to force myself to utilize more of my wardrobe, and because the idea of blogging appealed to my love of keeping journals. (:

  16. Haha, love Grant's recent participation! Was trying to figure out who the hell would write that on your blog!

And I love this, by the way. I'm such a sucker for coloured tights. And yep, I've been taking some unscheduled breaks myself these days from blogging, and not feeling even remotely bad about it!

  17. What really made me start blogging was "why not?" But really, I have to rewind because it all started with a seed of an idea. It really was by example-- after seeing so many daily fashion blogs, I was inspired to push myself style-wise. I wanted to BE that, too. So it really took months of thought to finally go 'why not?' and take that plunge. It definitely wasn't taken on a whim. :) I also agree with your viewpoint on blogging only when you're really feeling it. I sometimes feel pressure to blog everyday, but what's the point if my heart's not in it? I love to blog as often as I can, but I don't want to wear myself thin, y'know?

Also, whew, that was to answer your question. I love the first photo, it's so classic yet cute in a modern way. I love brightly colored tights, too!

And major danke for saying that I'm decent at mixing prints. :D I mucho appreciate it!

  18. I loooove bright tights! They are the best way to make a cold gloomy day way better! ;) I am right there with you on only blogging when I feel like it, which is definitely not everyday haha! I fully respect people who do daily posts, but I don't have the time/energy/will! :)

Your outfit is amazing- perfect blend of color, pattern, and subtlety. It's marvelous!

  22. I'm dying over your entire outfit right now! Too good. Take me thrifting with you, please! haha
As far as why I blog... I think I actually started it off as a thought/ journal-ish life blog to keep track of where my life would go once I graduated from high school. Little by little, my love for fashion started trickling into it more and more. I truly love doing it, no matter what direction it takes. It gives me an outlet for creativity, and definitely something to work at! And I have to say, the blogging community is just so fantastic! So many wonderful people I would have never had the chance to talk to before. <3

  25. Love love the Orphan Annie look! And I'm a total clothing recycler so it's nice to hear about people thrifting. Also, your comments about blogging inspired me to not stress over whether or not I've posted as if I'm giving up on a project. Guess it's best to document when it feels right :)

    Thanks for the comment!

  27. You are a genius at thrifting! About blogging, I try and keep a handle on it so it doesn't take over my life but the truth is I enjoy 'meeting' so many bloggers from all over the planet.

  28. This outfit is so gorgeous. I'm wishing I had that dress and those tights. I started blogging b/c I was bored and wanted some me time in the midst of being pregnant and having a crazy schedule - now it's a fun little creative outlet for me:-)

  30. I like blogging because I feel like I have a pretty impressive wardrobe, dresses of amazing fabrics making it impossible to close its doors properly, lots of wonderful vintage and thrifted trinkets. When I read blogs I like to imagine other peoples' wardrobes and how amazing they must look too. I am passionate about clothes, vintage fashion, and thrifting is my main hobby. I guess I just want to share a little bit of something nice with the world and see where it goes from there.

  31. I love to blog because I have met so many amazing people (yourself included!) that I wouldn't have been able to meet otherwise. I also like that I'm keeping track of things that I have done that I can look back on years later. My family reads my blog and it means so much to me to know that they go to it almost every day to see what I'm up to. I also want to help give other blogs exposure, show people what other people are up to and creating. I just really love blogging. I'm so glad I finally decided to do it.
